Page 6 of 365: Music of 2014

Hiya!

Day 4’s post about tattoos (Page 4 of 365: Tattoos) really seemed to go down a storm – I’m not quite sure why so many people read it but hey, I hope everyone likes what they read and will stick around for more.

As talking about the tattoos I wanted was a fairly personal thing, I wanted to follow this up again with my top 5 favourite albums of 2014. Note: this isn’t my favourite albums that were released in 2014 but my favouite albums that I listened to in 2014, some of which were released in 2014. Well, that was mighty confusing.

So, in no particular order, let’s start with the obvious shall we?

5 Seconds of Summer / 5 Seconds of Summer

5 Seconds of Summer released their debut album in 2014 and I knew I’d love it before it was released – I’ve liked their music for a while, I watched their YouTube channel and I recognised some of the original songs on the album.

What I like most about this album is how different it is from their debut single She Looks So Perfect – SLSP is a very pop orientated, stereotypical love song. That’s not to say I don’t like SLSP, I love pop every now and then but I prefer something with heavier guitars; more rocky. I like that 5SOS broke into the music scene with this pop anthem that has won them numerous awards but I like that their album and their singles are progressively marketing them as a rockier band. This is where I hope the future of the band goes and I think that’s where the band wants to be too.

Favourite song: English Love Affair

Meet The Vamps / The Vamps

I kind of love The Vamps unconditionally – I found them when they were in one of Carrie Hope Fletcher’s YouTube videos before Connor joined the band and I loved their sound – I don’t really listen to a band that sounds like theirs. I’d describe their sound as indie rock and normally I’m not too into indie music but I love the tone of lead singer Brad’s voice.

The album came out just before summer and it suits the season perfectly – it’s filled with mostly cheery, happy, catchy songs and it’s so light-hearted and chirpy and it makes me very happy.

Favourite song: Oh Cecelia (Breaking My Heart)

Legendary / The Summer Set

2014 was a year of finding new bands and new music for me. I actually saw The Summer Set lived when they opened for All Time Low in 2013 and I liked them but I didn’t know anything about them. I had the same thing with 5 Seconds of Summer and I got the two confused for a while too. The Summer Set are actually pretty similar to 5SOS in their genre – generally pop rock ish.

This album is pretty cheery but there’s also heavier elements and the occasional slow song but it’s really varied and so creative – this is the album that made me fall in love with The Summer Set.

X / Ed Sheeran

I love Ed Sheeran – I loved + and I’ve bought a couple of his older EPs but just like everyone else, I love Ed Sheeran. His lyrics are the most magical lyrics I’ve ever heard (this is exaggeration and I have heard lots of beautiful lyrics from the likes of Alex Gaskarth and Tom Fletcher also). I love how he writes really simple melodic songs that are just him and his guitar but he also writes songs with electric guitars and amazing drum rhythms. He’s really creative and I love listening to him.

Favourite song: Thinking Out Loud

Ever After / Marianas Trench

I found Marianas Trench from a post on tumblr about songs someone ould probably like if they liked 5 Seconds of Summer. The post was right. After listening to what I think it their most popular song Haven’t Had Enough I had to go listen to the rest of the album and I had it on repeat for about a month, I am obsessed with their music. This album is really innovative and I love the introductory and conclusive songs that have references to all the other songs. It’s incredible, maybe one of my favourite albums of all time.

Favourite song: Ever After

Special Mentions

McBusted and The Script both released albums in 2014 and they were really good and I really enjoyed them both but I didn’t think I liked them enough to include in my top 5. Both were good but I didn’t have the same passion that I did for the five that I did chose.

I’m going to see both of these bands in 2015 and I’m so indescribably excited I’m jumping up and down in my chair so I had to mention them in my 2014 music post!

Favourite McBusted song: Getting It Out

Favourite the Script song: Never Seen Anything ‘Quite Like You’

Excited For

2015 is going to be a great year for music. My favourite band All Time Low are releasing a new album in March (I think) and I’m so freaking excited. Since I’ve been a fan, All Time Low have released Dirty Work, Don’t Panic and Don’t Panic: It’s Longer Now. I’m so excited to hear new music from them – Alex Gaskarth’s worked a lot with 5 Seconds of Summer this year and hopefully we’ll hear elements of this in All Time Low’s new album too. I’m so excited.

Also Fall Out Boy. I feel like Fall Out Boy needs no explanation but I don’t think that’s how blogging works. Save Rock and Roll is without a shadow of a doubt one of my favourite albums of all time (to the degree that I played it to my mum and it is now one of her favourite albums too) and I really like the songs they’ve already released. I love Fall Out Boy a lot and I love how they experiment with genre and push the boundaries, blurring the lines between where their music can be categorised.

I love listening to music from a really happy part of my life and I’m really excited about All Time Low and Fall Out Boy’s new music. If there’s any other albums you think I should listen to please leave a comment!

Thank you for reading,

Sophie xx
